RiP Practice Supervisor Development Programme

This programme is aimed at Assistant Team Managers in Children's Social Care and is recommended for all Assistant Team Managers

Description

PSDP is a 6.5 day taught programme which is delivered online over a 2-3 month period. To watch a number of filmed interviews from practice supervisors and managers about the impact of PSDP click here.

As well as hearing directly from practice supervisors and middle leaders who have attended the PSDP, you can also listen to senior leaders and facilitators who deliver PSDP teaching reflecting on the impact of supporting practice supervisors to continue to develop their skills in providing emotionally literate, curious and containing supervision.

What does the Practice Supervisor Development Programme entail?

An introductory session - This meeting will allow us to explain the programme in more detail to you, check that you can access the online platform we are using to deliver PSDP and go through a number of shorts tasks that we need you to complete to begin the course. It is important that you attend – we expect timings to be from 9.30 – 11.30am but please allow half a day. 6 days online study and teaching – Teaching is scheduled in 2-day blocks over a 2-3 month period. Core teaching hours are 9.15am – 4.30pm. We ask you to reserve the whole day and do not book in any other workrelated activities when attending PSDP. We want you to have time to focus on the activities and ideas introduced on the programme and not be bothered by other distractions.

Each teaching day will include a mix of -

 Online teaching and presentations delivered by facilitators

 Virtual group discussions and networking with other practice supervisors

 Guided individual study and reflection on learning

 Regular breaks away from the screen

Just before your programme begins we will send you a resource pack and course materials through the post. The pack contains resources you will use during the programme and some treats to keep you going as you study online

Three one-to-one individual reflective development sessions –

You will be given information about booking one-to-one individual reflective practice sessions on Moodle and a range of dates to choose from. These sessions give you an opportunity to talk about any aspect of learning on the programme or your development as a Practice Supervisor in a confidential, reflective and supportive space with an experienced social work professional. These sessions are highly rated by practice supervisors who have already attended PSDP. The first session is scheduled after your first block of teaching and the second session between Days 4 and 5 and the third session is held approximately four to five weeks after day six. Each session lasts an hour and you will be given information about how to connect remotely or by phone. This blog, written by a previous participant, details what one-to-one sessions are like.

Learning Needs Evaluations – You complete three important evaluations during the programme, these are completed online and take approx.10 minutes.

The first before your intro session (LNE1), the second at the end of day six (LNE2) and the third (LNE3) approx. 8 weeks after teaching has ended. The evaluation asks you to consider your learning needs in relation to the Post Qualifying Standards Knowledge and Skills Statements (Child and Family Practice Supervisors). The evaluations are a key opportunity to track your learning and development progress and needs at different points during the programme. We also ask your manager to complete an evaluation of your learning needs in the same format as part of the programme. This helps evidence your learning and informs future CPD.

Reflective Assignment - After you have completed the programme you have the option of submitting a self-reflective assignment reviewing your learning and tracking your development against the programme outcomes. It is part of the criteria to achieve a Certificate of Completion and evidences learning transfer.

PSDP – Resources and Tools for Practice Supervisors We have also developed an open access website to support your learning on the PSDP. It contains over 100 resources for practice supervisors and managers in child and family work which you can use in supervision and share freely with colleagues or supervisees. You can dip in and out of this as you see fit before, during or after the PSDP. There is also a CPD guide on how resources can be grouped to provide some CPD sessions to your team

As well as serving as an important quality assurance mechanism for individual children and families, they can also be an invaluable source of learning, providing insight into the wider practice system. All too often, however, audit has been criticised as being reductionist and ‘tick box’ in its nature. This webinar will explore the potential of audit to be used in more constructive and helpful ways.
