n recent years we have learnt an enormous amount about the changes that occur in the brain during the teenage years. This is due to advances in the technology of scanning. These changes include maturation of the brain, leading to many positive advances in thinking. However, there are also some changes that involve restructuring, which may cause some challenges. In this session, Professor John Coleman will outline the main changes, and discuss the implications of these for behaviour and adjustment. He will cover the topics of risk, the management of stress and anxiety, and the impact of trauma and early adverse events on brain development in the teenage years. The session will conclude with a look at the value of this new knowledge for all in the social care system.
