MRC-Listening Beyond The Checklist: Supporting Care Leavers To Be Grown-Up

Children’s social care often talks about listening to young people’s voices, but what does that really mean in practice, especially for those leaving care? This webinar will draw on an interdisciplinary research study that brings together education and social care to explore how Personal Advisers (PAs) in a Leaving Care service might play vital educational roles. Drawing on research with a care leaving service in a local authority in England as part of the Children’s Information Project, we explore how this educational role requires PAs to encourage young people to move from expressing a wish, to reflecting on what kind of life they want to lead.

The webinar invites participants to reflect on the following:

• How do you balance your roles as adviser, supporter and educator?
• What questions do you ask to help young people reflect their desires?
• How can you create space for dialogue, uncertainty and ‘grown-upness’?
