MRC Webinar - Championing Communication: Working With Interpreters to Overcome Language Barriers
This webinar is managed by our partner, MRC.
Description
Dr. Sarah Pollock is a registered social worker and Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Manchester Metropolitan University. She specialises in social work across language differences. Sarah’s successful leadership of a British Academy research project recently led to the commissioning of interpreter training for social workers and social work students across ten local authorities and four universities, and she is currently evaluating the impact of this intervention.
Sarah is Chair of the Greater Manchester branch of the British Association of Social Workers and has worked with the Department for Education to address recruitment and retention challenges in social work practice.
A language barrier impacts over one million people in England, and this population is selfdefined as having poorer health than those who can communicate in English. Therefore, it is essential that those involved in social care have the skills to successfully work with interpreters.
In this webinar, Sarah will explore the challenges faced by social workers, interpreters, and individuals accessing social work across a language barrier. She will disseminate the findings of her own research, alongside that of others in the sector, to offer evidence-based suggestions for good practice in this field.
